James stopped by the Fox Theatre in Oakland tonight to make some noise with his friends Pepper, Woody, Mike and Reed as Corrosion of Conformity continued their tour with Lamb of God & Clutch. Metallica decided to play a gig at Rasputin Music in Berkeley to celebrate Record Store Day AND throw a lig at the old Metallica Mansion on Carlson Street in El Cerrito. Steffan Chirazi scribbles furious adjectives (from 1983-85!) from the gig floor, then sprints over to El Cerrito to give you the skinny there. Spuling and grammeh NOT guaranteed!

Keep checking back with your friendly local music store; we expect everyone to have the deluxe box sets available very shortly.

We’re celebrating Record Store Day in the best possible way we could think of... playing live! We’ll be traveling back to our roots by setting up at the legendary Berkeley, CA mainstay Rasputin Music on Saturday April 16, 2016 for an extremely unique RSD live performance. As this year’s Record Store Day Ambassadors we will also be celebrating the release of remastered and deluxe versions of Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning, getting loud, noisy and sweaty, shaking up the East Bay old-school style.
Who would’ve ever thought that Master of Puppets, a record made by a band hovering way left of the mainstream in 1986, would be granted the honor of being added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress? It happened today as Master was selected as one of the 25 new sound recordings added to the registry of works that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Whew, that’s heavy!
The selections this year bring the total number of recordings to 450, as the program began in 2002, and we are proud and humbled to join such icons as John Coltrane, Merle Haggard, Santana and George Carlin, among others, in this pantheon of American recordings as 2015’s inductees. Master of Puppets is a collection of songs that we consider a defining moment in our formative years and the honor bestowed upon this album is beyond thrilling.

A night with Lars Ulrich and Friends was, by its mere definition, never going to be predictable. Look at the invitees. Lorin Ashton aka Bassnectar (DJ/electronic musician), Marc Benioff (Salesforce Chairman and CEO), Les Claypool (bassist/singer/songwriter/composer), Peter Coyote (actor/writer/Zen Buddhist Priest), James Hetfield (Metallica), Jonathan Parker (filmmaker), David Turner (designer), and Torben Ulrich (creative force across mediums and athlete) are not the type of creative energies who deliver the expected, and thus it proved to be, the atypical pace being set before a word had even been dropped…
We had the thrill of kicking off the very first Record Store Day by meeting many of you at an in-store appearance at Rasputin Music in Mountain View, CA in April of 2008.
