And Here We Are...

Metallica decided to play a gig at Rasputin Music in Berkeley to celebrate Record Store Day AND throw a lig at the old Metallica Mansion on Carlson Street in El Cerrito. Steffan Chirazi scribbles furious adjectives (from 1983-85!) from the gig floor, then sprints over to El Cerrito to give you the skinny there. Spuling and grammeh NOT guaranteed!

Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning: Remastered & Reissued Hit The Streets

It’s been a long road since 1983 and today we celebrate our first two album releases as reissues of both Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning hit the streets 2016 style, all polished and remastered for the most advanced sound quality possible. Unfortunately some of you in certain parts of the world may have trouble finding the deluxe box sets on release day due to production issues we have encountered. Our friends at Universal Music are doing everything in their power to get these box sets out to the fine folks at retail, but you may see delays depending on where you live. Keep checking back with your friendly local music store; we expect everyone to have the deluxe box sets available very shortly.

A few lucky Fifth Members and Rasputin customers have already won their tickets, but we know that many of you might still like to join us in the comfort of your own living room, so we’ve teamed up with our friends at Facebook to bring the show to you via a Facebook Live stream.

4/11 Update: Contest winners have been emailed.

We’re celebrating Record Store Day in the best possible way we could think of... playing live! Master of Puppets Added To The Library of Congress National Recording Registry

Who would’ve ever thought that Master of Puppets, a record made by a band hovering way left of the mainstream in 1986, would be granted the honor of being added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress? It happened today as Master was selected as one of the 25 new sound recordings added to the registry of works that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Whew, that’s heavy!

The selections this year bring the total number of recordings to 450, as the program began in 2002, and we are proud and humbled to join such icons as John Coltrane, Merle Haggard, Santana and George Carlin, among others, in this pantheon of American recordings as 2015’s inductees. Master of Puppets is a collection of songs that we consider a defining moment in our formative years and the honor bestowed upon this album is beyond thrilling.

A Night with Lars Ulrich & Friends

A night with Lars Ulrich and Friends was, by its mere definition, never going to be predictable. Look at the invitees. Lorin Ashton aka Bassnectar (DJ/electronic musician), Marc Benioff (Salesforce Chairman and CEO), Les Claypool (bassist/singer/songwriter/composer), Peter Coyote (actor/writer/Zen Buddhist Priest), James Hetfield (Metallica), Jonathan Parker (filmmaker), David Turner (designer), and Torben Ulrich (creative force across mediums and athlete) are not the type of creative energies who deliver the expected, and thus it proved to be, the atypical pace being set before a word had even been dropped…

This year on April 16th we’ll be joining forces with over 1,400 independent record stores in the States to celebrate our favorite neighborhood music shops.

Sneak Peek Of The Master of Puppets Book Cover

UPDATE: STOP THE PRESSES! Check out the revised book cover and a few sample page spreads.

Over a year ago we told you that we had teamed up with acclaimed award winning author Matt Taylor to tell the definitive story of Master of Puppets and the subsequent tour that followed its release. You all jumped in to assist us in putting the pieces together by sending your photos, videos, stories and mementos... we could not have done it without you! Here’s your first glance at the cover of Metallica: Back to the Front, which will see the light of day Fall of 2016.

The Night Before

The sold-out stadium, with another 340,000+ around the world watching online, connected with an old school Metallica vibe for a roll-back-the-years metal revival which onstage showed that this lot must have done a deal with the guy downstairs because Metallica looked, and felt, completely ageless, timeless and as alive and relevant as ever. Yeah, yeah, platitudes you cry, but you only have to look back over the footage which is already out there, and let your own eyes and ears decide. They were sharp, razor sharp, yet with a warm and “welcome-to-the-shindig-raging kegger” vibe.

The Night Before "The Night Before"

It was quiet…very, very quiet…loud lights, really loud and pretty damn special too with a superb stage-length LED back screen going at angles to itself, but the house was quiet.

A soundcheck was about to happen, a couple hundred members of the Metallica Club had won special Fifth Member access to the soundcheck but they were still outside and the band hadn’t played a note.

It was due to start.

Wednesday Night Note...

We hear that a Canadian Metallica tribute band is a little upset with us and with a little digging figured out why. It turns out that a certain letter was delivered to the band Sandman that neither we nor our management were aware of until it surfaced online. Lucky for us the band was kind enough to post it for us to see, and it turns out that we have a very overzealous attorney who sent this letter without our knowledge.

We have a long history of not only enjoying tribute bands, but we started as one. Heck, we even recorded a two-disc album of covers! We will always remember those days and continue to enjoy tribute bands, even inviting them to support us on various tours over the years.

Sandman should file the letter in the trash, we’ve spoken to Joe Di Taranto of the band and it’s all good. Keep doing what you’re doing... we totally support you! And in the meantime our…
